Guardian

Guardian is one of the world's largest manufacturers of float glass and fabricated glass products. You also should know that we manufacture and supply the automotive industry with a variety of exterior products. We've also become a significant player in the building materials distribution business. And somewhere along the line, we became the world's largest producer of mirrors.

UltraWhite™
Low-iron glass – Clarity you can see.  Are you in the market for a crisp, clear glass without the long lead times? Do your customers want color neutrality and improved clarity on demand? Guardian Industries, a global leader in the glass, automotive and building products industries, may have the solution: UltraWhite™ low-iron glass.  UltraWhite™ has been selected as the glass of choice for the World Trade Center #7 Building project, shown at right.

Compare Guardian’s new UltraWhite™ glass to ordinary float glass, it becomes clear – clarity you can see.  Designers have long sought glass that doesn't dull or distort the true color spectrum. Guardian UltraWhite™ is that glass. The virtual absence of color makes UltraWhite™ glass the natural choice when true color and clarity count.

Characteristics
UltraWhite™ glass is manufactured with reduced iron content – low-iron glass is clearer. Our scientists have found that reducing the iron and using a new raw materials formula increases light transmission and reduces the greenish tint in clear glass that is most apparent when viewed from the edge. This green tint becomes more visible as regular float glass gets thicker.
The result is pure, sparkling, very clear glass.

Applications
The stunning clarity of UltraWhite™ glass makes it an obvious choice for atriums, skylights, doors and entranceways, display cases and storefronts. As a matter of fact, UltraWhite™ can be used virtually anywhere regular float glass can be used.

UltraWhite™ provides a dramatic improvement when used in laminated applications. Until now, the typical result when laminating conventional clear float glass was color distortion and a reduction of visible light transmission as the laminate thickness increased. UltraWhite™’s combination of strength, security and distortion-free vision equals unparalleled performance.

Availability
UltraWhite low-iron glass is available in thicknesses ranging from 3 mm to 15 mm and sizes up to 130” x 204”. Guardian has implemented a regular production schedule to manufacture fresh UltraWhite glass to meet any construction schedule – 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th quarter.

Guardian ExtraClear™

The New Standard for Low-iron Glass.  Whether you are framing priceless art, a family photo or painting decorative glass, you expect the image to be clear and the colors to be true. Now you can count on it.

Guardian understands the importance of clarity. That’s why we created ExtraClear™. Guardian’s ExtraClear low-iron float glass utilizes a new material formula that increases light transmission and color neutrality when compared to standard float glass.  The result is clearer, true colors from your pictures, art and literally anything protected by glass.

Characteristics
ExtraClear float glass is a significant step above standard float glass. Containing a lower iron content, ExtraClear has a higher visible light transmission and offers superior optics and clarity compared to standard glass.

Standard clear glass has a greenish tint that is most apparent when viewed from the edge. This green tint becomes more visible as standard float glass gets thicker. We have reduced the greenish tint to allow a cleaner, brighter color spectrum through the glass.

Applications
ExtraClear float glass can be used anywhere standard float glass can. It does the job of standard float glass, only better and should be considered for many applications.

DiamondGuard™ LMG Glass
Low Maintenance and scratch resistance -- the future has truly arrived.
Any window that requires less cleaning is a blessing. But make that same window scratch resistant and color neutral and you have DiamondGuard LMG. It’s the latest advancement from the scientists at Guardian—a solution that will help you answer that consumer demand for “easy to clean” windows.  The key is surface properties that minimize debris accumulation and shed water to keep the glass surface cleaner and clearer. And since the coating is remarkably scratch resistant, no special handling during fabrication or installation is necessary.

DiamondGuard™ SRG
DiamondGuard® SRG (Scratch Resistance Glass) is a family of permanent protective coatings that provides glass with exceptional scratch resistance. In fact, glass with one of our DiamondGuard SRG coatings is proven to be over 10 times more scratch resistant than tempered and chemically strengthened glass.  Developed by Guardian’s Science and Technology Center using a patented process of diamond-like carbon deposition on glass, these coatings are not only renowned for their toughness, but their versatility and beauty as well.

Heat-Strengthened Glass
Wind load, thermal stress. Bring it on.  Heat-strengthened glass is less prone to spontaneous breakage than tempered glass. And it’s the product of choice, with the exception of instances where tempered glass or laminated glass is required by law, wind load, local or national building codes.

Tempered Glass
A glass that’s all about safety, even when it breaks.  Tempered glass is often referred to as "safety glass." And for good reason. It’s more resistant to breakage than normal float glass. And if it is broken, it usually breaks into relatively small particles, which are less likely to cause injury.

Laminated Glass and Security Glazing
When the going gets tough, our glass gets tougher.

Guardian produces Architectural Laminated Glass in a full array of thicknesses and sizes. It consists of two or more panes bonded together by a tough, durable plastic (polyvinyl butyral - PVB) interlayer (or interlayers).

If broken by impact, laminated architectural glass tends to remain integral in its frame, minimizing the risk of injury from sharp edges and flying or falling glass particles. It also strongly resists penetration by the impacting object.

Guardian laminated glass meets the current requirements of the ASTM E-1172 "Standard Specification for Laminated Architectural Float Glass," and is ideal for use in areas where building codes require hurricane resistant glazing.

Acclimate™ Residential Low E Glass (RLE)
Any climate, any time of year—one glass masters them all.

Climates can fluctuate dramatically throughout a single day – not to mention an entire season – costing you in utility payments and in the comfort of your living and workspaces.

Fortunately, the scientists at Guardian have developed a brilliant solution: Acclimate RLE Glass, the world’s most advanced low-emissivity glass. Compared with standard glass, it improves insulating performance by as much as 50 percent, and does equally well blocking unwanted heat gain. So, regardless of which way the climate turns, Acclimate RLE Glass stands up to it, regulating your interior environment every day, every hour, in every season.

Oldcastle Glass® provides the architectural and glazing communities with a comprehensive range of architectural glass products. With innovative technology, we create products that satisfy design and performance needs. These include highly visual design products like Stackwall's™ soaring structural glass walls and Bentemp's® dramatic glass curves, as well as high performance products for blast mitigation solutions, and our exclusive StormGlass™, the most advanced hurricane-resistant glazing available. With more North American locations than anyone in the architectural glass industry, we have the products you want, when and where you need them.

Heat-treated glass is glass that has been processed through a tempering oven to increase its strength to resist impact, mechanical loads and thermal stress breakage. There are two distinct heat-treated glass products, heat-strengthened and fully tempered.

Stackwall™/Vision Vue® and Finwall™, are exclusive structural wall systems with glass panels comprising the facade and vertical glass mullions to structurally resist wind load and seismic forces. Stackwall™/Vision Vue® and Finwall™, are free from visual obstructions, limiting the need for metal framing to the perimeter creating a seemingly floating glass facade.

Oldcastle Glass® entrance systems can employ swinging or sliding doors, as well as stacking or bifold panels. Many variations are available with Oldcastle Glass® tempered glass entry doors. They can be used with corner patches only, with continuous rails only, or in combinations of the two. The sketches shown here illustrate some of the many possibilities.

A creative alternative for architects and designers, Bentemp® is tempered or heat-strengthened glass that is bent, during the heat-treating process, to a specified radius to create unique profiles for installations in commercial and residential applications.

Laminated Glass is a multifunctional glazing material that can be used in a variety of applications. It is manufactured by permanently bonding two or more lites of glass with layers of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer, under heat and pressure, to create a single construction.

Oldcastle Glass® Insulating Glass (IG) units are hermetically sealed combinations of two or more lites of glass separated by a dry airspace. IG units improve thermal performance, significantly reducing heating and air conditioning costs. IG units also reduce interior condensation in cold climates.

Innovative, Energy Absorbing glazing systems offered by Oldcastle-Arpal, LLC. including blast mitigation windows, doors, and curtain walls designed to protect building occupants against specified threats during a blast event. These blast mitigating systems can be incorporated into architectural design and historical preservation, and are available for new construction or retrofit applications.

Oldcastle Glass® offers nonwired Pyroguard clear safety glass and polished wired glass for fire-rated glazing applications.

Oldcastle Glass® silk-screened products offer building designers exciting and different ways to customize exterior and interior glass, by using standard and custom screened patterns in a variety of colors. Silk-Screened glass is offered monolithically, in insulating glass units, or as laminated glass, providing beauty, safety and functionality.

Offered monolithically, in insulating units, or as laminated glass, spandrel glass is typically specified for buildings' nonvision areas to mask construction materials. Even refurbished buildings covered in a combination of vision and spandrel glass can appear to be constructed entirely of glass. Oldcastle Glass® offers two types of spandrel ceramic frit and silicone paint.

Solarban 60
Solarban® 60 was engineered to control solar heat gain, which is essential to minimizing cooling costs. In a standard one inch insulating glass unit, Solarban® 60 has the following features:
  • Exterior appearance similar to clear, uncoated glass
  • Blocks approximately 60% of the total solar energy
  • Excellent insulation value (U-Value = 0.29)

Note: This product meets the new energy efficiency guidelines set forth by the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) for spectrally selective glazing products.

LSG Ratio: Using the Light to Solar Gain Ratio (LSG) allows performance comparisons to be made between glazing products, and highlights the standards set by PPG glasses. The LSG ratio is the ratio of visible light transmittance to solar heat gain coefficient. The higher the LSG ratio, the better the glazing is at reducing unwanted solar heat gain and maximizing desirable natural light transmittance. Excellent LSG ratios can be attained using spectrally selective tinted glasses and/or Solarban® Solar Control Low-E glasses.

PPG Azuria™ is a spectrally selective tinted glass like no other architectural glass product available today, from its aquamarine appearance to its unsurpassed performance. Azuria™ glass provides buildings with a desirable low shading coefficient and high visible light transmittance, a unique combination unmatched by any other commercial glass product. PPG Azuria™ is the best blend of solar control and visible light transmittance available in an aquamarine glass product.

Azuria™ is the perfect glass for ocean-front structures and poolside settings, with its azure blue appearance complementing the natural beauty of the outdoors and its high light transmittance bringing that beauty indoors.

Behind that beauty lies incredible performance. The Shading Coefficient of Azuria™ glass is extraordinarily low, especially for an uncoated tinted product: 0.44 in a one inch insulating unit. Yet, visible light transmittance is high, especially for a tinted product: 60% for a one inch I.G. unit. This combination yields a Light to Solar Gain Ratio (LSG) of 1.58 which no other commercially available architectural glass can match.

Note: This product meets the new energy efficiency guidelines set forth by the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) for spectrally selective glazing products.

Solarcool® glasses provide maximum flexibility due to the durability of the metallic oxide coating, which is deposited onto the float glass during production.

Thus, Solarcool® glass can be glazed with the reflective coating positioned on either the first (#1) or second (#2) surface. The glass has improved performance, higher exterior visible reflectivity and a slight bronze hue when installed with the coating on the first surface. When installed with the coating on the second surface, Solarcool® glass has lower exterior visible reflectivity while maintaining the substrate glass color.

Solarcool® coated glass can be used monolithically or combined with clear glass in an insulating glass unit for greater thermal performance. When joined with PPG’s Solarban® 60 solar control, Low-E glasses, even more significant performance results. Click here to see insulated glass unit comparison data.

Solarcool® Caribia™ Glass
Caribia™ glass, when combined with Solarcool® coating on the #2 surface, creates a unique warm green aesthetic that blends nicely with the surrounding environment. Along with the other ocean-inspired reflective products, Solarcool® Azuria™ and Solarcool® Solexia™ glasses, Solarcool®,Caribia™ provides both excellent light transmittance and a low solar heat gain coefficient for exceptional solar control performance.

The warm green hue of Solarcool® Caribia™ glass becomes muted when the reflective coating is used on the #1 surface. The result is a more reflective, metallic appearance.

Solarcool® Solexia™ Glass
With the soft reflectivity of Solarcool® coated glass and light green color of Solarcool® tinted glass, Solarcool® Solexia™ glass can create standout aesthetics for any commercial project.

When glazed with the reflective coating facing inboard (#2), Solarcool® (2) Solexia™ glass has a natural-green reflectivity that enhances the beauty of its surroundings, while harmonizing with other natural building materials.

When glazed with reflective coating on the outboard (#1) surface, Solarcool® (1) Solexia™ glass has higher visible light reflectivity that adapts to changing light conditions and the surrounding andscape.

Solarcool® Azuria™ Glass
Solarcool® coated Azuria™ glass takes the best properties of two superb PPG glass products and combines them into one. With the coating on the #2 surface, the softly reflective aquamarine color of the glass is visually stunning. Because Solarcool® Azuria™ glass transmits more visible light than most competitive products, building interiors will be brighter and will require less artificial lighting.

When the Solarcool® coated surface is in the #1 position, outdoor reflectivity is increased and the solar heat gain is decreased, resulting in reduced air-conditioning loads. Outdoor reflected color is more neutral.

Solarcool® Bronze Glass
Solarcool® bronze glass provides a silver-bronze aesthetic and reduced solar heat gain when glazed with the reflective coating on the outboard (#1) surface and a dark-bronze aesthetic when glazed with the reflective coating on the inboard (#2) surface. With the reflective coating on the #2 surface, Solarcool® bronze glass has subtle reflectivity.

Solarcool® Gray Glass
Solarcool® gray glass provides a silvery aesthetic when glazed with the reflective coating on the outboard (#1) surface and a dark gray aesthetic when glazed with the reflective coating on the inboard (#2) surface. Solarcool® (2) gray glass is the solution when a true gray color is desired in a low-reflectivity glass.

Solarcool® Graylite® Glass
Solarcool® Graylite® glass provides a rich silver aesthetic when glazed with the reflective coating on the outboard (#1) surface and a dramatic, almost-black aesthetic when glazed with the reflective coating on the inboard (#2) surface. The very low visible light transmittance of Solarcool® Graylite® glass (5% for one inch insulating unit) makes it ideal for privacy glazing applications or high sunlight climates where glare control is required.

Solargray® Glass
For nearly 40 years, Solargray® glass has been selected for commercial structures because of its cool light-gray appearance and ability to control solar heat gain and glare. Solargray® glass in a one inch insulating unit provides a visible light transmittance of 40%. Its light gray color makes Solargray® glass an attractive choice, combined with almost any other exterior cladding material.

Solarbronze® Glass
The warmth of its bronze tint has made Solarbronze® float glass a popular glass solution since 1959 for commercial buildings. Solarbronze® glass reduces solar heat gain and glare while providing a visible light transmittance of 48% in a one inch insulating unit. Solarbronze® glass imparts a subtle richness from the exterior and adds a warm glow to interior decors without noticeably influencing true color.

Optigray® 23 Glass maintains desirable light transmittance – 21% in a one inch insulating unit – while blocking 67% of the total solar energy, for outstanding heat load reduction. The shading coefficient is one of the lowest of any architectural tinted glass product: 0.33 for a one inch I.G. unit.  Optigray® 23 glass helps reduce the air conditioning load in a commercial structure, which means the interior environment can be controlled effectively with smaller, less costly HVAC systems.  Optigray® 23 glass provides another topnotch solution to energy management needs in a new gray color option.
